Discover the fascinating world of plant breeding and learn how to create your own unique flowers and vegetables in your home garden. In this hands-on class, professional plant breeder Janet will guide you through the essentials of getting started: you’ll explore flower anatomy, learn how to select the best parent plants, practice cross-pollination techniques, and understand how to harvest and store seeds for future growing.
Instructor’s bio:
Janet Egger has been in horticulture since 1971 and has been a plant breeder since 1980. She holds a B.S. in botany and an M.S. in horticulture from UC Davis. She retired as head plant breeder for Oregon’s Terra Nova Nurseries in 2019. Janet bred many plants in the trade, including cultivars of Heuchera, Heucherella, Sedum, Kniphofia, Agastache, Penstemon, Phygelius, Podophyllum ‘Spotty Dotty’, among others. She has taught horticulture classes at UC Davis, Merritt College and Gavilan College. She volunteers at Dunn Gardens as a board member, docent, propagator, lecturer and plant identifier.
