Perfect Plants for the Shade Garden at Heronswood with Dr. Ross Bayton

Members: $40, Non-members: $60. ($20 of each registrant’s fee will be donated to Heronswood Garden.)

June 19, 2025 @ 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Expand your plant palette to include shade-loving plants on this tour led by Heronswood Garden’s Director Dr. Ross Bayton. He will reveal a wealth of richly hued and elaborately textured plants that flourish in various shade conditions: fuchsias to foamflowers, hydrangeas to heucheras, tassel ferns to toad lilies. And there’s a bonus: the garden’s show-stopping giant Himalayan lilies will be in their peak towering splendor. Bring your lunch and explore the garden after the tour until closing time at 3 pm. And of course, many of the specimens you’ll fall in love with are available for purchase in the garden shop.

Speaker’s Bio:

London-born botanist, taxonomist, plantsman and gardener Dr. Bayton received his Ph.D. in plant taxonomy from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. His intensive research and fieldwork in Kenya, Madagascar and Burkina Faso led to a revision of the Borassus genus (palm). He is the author of several books, including “New Trees: Introductions to Cultivation” (with John Grimshaw), “Plant Families: A Guide for Gardeners and Botanists” (with Simon Maugham), and most recently “The Gardener’s Botanical: An Encyclopedia of Latin Plant Names.” Ross was the gardening editor of the UK’s best-selling gardening periodical, BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine. He joined Heronswood in 2017 as a botanist and became director in 2022. When not there, he is cultivating his five-acre home garden in Bremerton.
