The Pendleton and Elisabeth Carey Miller Charitable Foundation (PECMCF) and the Northwest Horticultural Society (NHS) are pleased to offer scholarships to students in the horticulture programs at Edmonds College, Lake Washington Institute of Technology, and South Seattle College. Elisabeth C. Miller and others founded the Northwest Horticultural Society (NHS) in 1966 to provide educational resources for gardeners throughout the Puget Sound region and to promote the best practices in horticulture. The Pendleton and Elisabeth Carey Miller Charitable Foundation has supported NHS in these endeavors carrying on the Miller family tradition.
These scholarships offer financial support to a student for one year covering tuition and, with the funds remaining after tuition is paid, books, student fees, and incidental expenses. Tuition funds are sent to the qualifying institution to be applied to tuition costs for the recipient when they registration for their classes. The remaining funds are sent directly to the student. All scholarship awardees will receive a complementary membership in the NHS for one year.
Scholarship Eligibility
To be eligible for a scholarship, a student must be a resident of the State of Washington; be enrolled in the horticulture program at Edmonds College in Edmonds, Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Kirkland, or South Seattle College in West Seattle; and they must be preparing for a career in horticulture, environmental studies, landscape design, botany, or another plant-oriented field in urban horticulture.
Past recipients of the Elisabeth Carey Miller Scholarships in Horticulture may reapply for additional scholarships once the funds from the first scholarship are exhausted.
Selection Criterion
Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need and merit, weighing various factors, including the applicant’s potential to contribute to the practice of horticulture during their career.
Application Process
Student applications will include the following:
- The Elisabeth Carey Miller Scholarship in Horticulture application form.
- A statement indicating why you have chosen this area of study and outlining your career plans. This statement should include details about financial need, life experience, honors, activities, and other achievements you consider relevant to your proposed career in horticulture.
- Two letters of recommendation, one from a faculty member at your institution and one from a person (other than a relative) who is familiar with your goals, values, and experiences.
- Your most recent school transcript.

The committee reviewing applications will include three NHS board members, three NHS members that are not currently board members, and three representatives of the PECMCF including the Executive Director of the Elisabeth Carey Miller Botanical Garden. Once the committee has selected the scholarship awardees, the applicants will be notified, and the funding will follow soon thereafter in late April or early May.
This scholarship program is funded primarily by an annual grant from the Pendleton and Elisabeth Carey Miller Charitable Foundation and augmented and administered by the Northwest Horticultural Society.
