DESCRIPTION:Discover Northwest Garden & Stone\nNorthwest Garden & Stone opened in late 2024 and focuses on specialty perennials\, conifers\, Japanese maples\, and climate-adapted selections that push traditional growing boundaries. It offers a thoughtfully curated experience that goes beyond traditional landscape supply. In addition to select natural stone and garden materials\, you’ll find garden accents and containers and a highly unique gift shop featuring local artisans\, with one-of-a-kind items for home and garden.  \nOwner Gary Musket also owns nearby Northwest Landscape Supply\, which provides organic soils\, composts\, soil amendments and a wide variety of crushed rock. General Manager Matt Porter spent 20 years as general manager at Molbak’s and prior to that\, was a sales manager at Roger’s Gardens in Southern California for 10 years\, where he developed a passion for low-water-use\, structural\, and climate-adapted plants. \n

She holds a B.S. in botany and an M.S. in horticulture from UC Davis. She retired as head plant breeder for Oregon’s Terra Nova Nurseries in 2019. Janet bred many plants in the trade\, including cultivars of Heuchera\, Heucherella\, Sedum\, Kniphofia\, Agastache\, Penstemon\, Phygelius\, Podophyllum ‘Spotty Dotty’\, among others. She has taught horticulture classes at UC Davis\, Merritt College and Gavilan College. She volunteers at Dunn Gardens as a board member\, docent\, propagator\, lecturer and plant identifier.

No prior drawing experience is necessary. Botanical sketch journaling is not about making perfect drawings—it is about slowing down\, noticing details and recording your observations in a creative way. Esteemed botanical illustrator Crystal Shin will guide you through simple techniques for observing and sketching plants. Learn what botanical features to look for\, how to begin a sketch journal and how quick sketches can help you better understand plant forms and structures. You will receive a sketchbook and pencil for in-class use that you can take home. Feel free to bring your own drawing supplies. \nInstructor’s Bio: \nCrystal is a botanical artist and natural science illustrator known for her detailed\, scientifically accurate plant drawings. She completed the Natural Science Illustration Certificate program at the University of Washington and served as the primary botanical illustrator for the second edition of Flora of the Pacific Northwest for the UW Herbarium at the Burke Museum\, creating 882 illustrations. She continues to work with the Herbarium as a botanical illustrator\, and her artwork has been featured in various scientific journals and publications. Crystal is a sought-after instructor\, teaching nationally and internationally for various organizations including the Burke Museum\, the Washington Native Plant Society\, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators Northwest\, Pacific Northwest Botanical Artists\, the American Society of Botanical Artists\, the New York Botanical Gardens\, and the Vienna School of Botanical Illustration.     \n \n
