SUMMARY:Gardening without Horticulture: Plants\, Poetry and Sentiment in Japanese Gardens with Mark Bourne
DESCRIPTION:Japanese gardens are famous for scenes of tranquil beauty that evoke deep contemplation – however\, the plant palette used to create these gardens is shockingly simple compared to the horticultural extravagance of the Western tradition. Classically trained Japanese garden creator Mark Bourne will illustrate how Japanese gardeners create engaging scenes with simple materials\, describing a set of compositional techniques that emphasize relationships over objects and seeing plants through the lens of poetry and natural imagery. He will discuss these principles and techniques and demonstrate how they can be brought home to our own gardens\, allowing us to capture some of the magic of Japanese gardens while satisfying our urge for diversity. \nSpeaker’s bio: Mark is the owner of Windsmith Design\, an integrated garden design and construction company based in Bellevue. He holds a master’s degree in architectural history and completed a full apprenticeship to Yasuo Kitayama in Kyoto\, Japan. As an apprentice\, he worked in the Kyoto Imperial Palace\, Katsura Rikyu\, and many historically significant Zen temples\, building new gardens and pruning pines and shrubs. As a teacher and a designer\, Mark is particularly interested in the delicate balance between innovation and continuity that keeps the tradition relevant\, without abandoning the rich history that provides the foundation for practice.

The green spaces and gardens that enable that connection are equally important. Explore the lessons that can be learned from the “natural intelligence” inherent in plant life and learn how the new Seattle Botanic Gardens is working to connect plants\, people and place in one of the most technologically wired cities in the US. \nSpeaker’s bio: In her role at Seattle Botanic Gardens\, Christina oversees operations and management of the Washington Park Arboretum\, the Center for Urban Horticulture and public programming at the Seattle Japanese Garden. She is deeply committed to public engagement\, science communication\, inclusive outreach\, and connection with diverse communities. Connecting plants and people has been the common thread through her wide-ranging career: prior to joining the SBG\, she served as the director of the University of Washington Botanic Gardens\, spent 11 years as a senior program officer in agricultural development at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, and covered science and the environment for public radio in rural Colorado. She has a PhD in the evolutionary genetics of monkey-flowers from the University of Washington.

Lisa will present her favorite best sellers\, as well as the unique varieties with serious “wow” factor\, including the easiest to grow\, most hardy and longest blooming. She’ll share tips on helping perennials thrive throughout the growing seasons and overwinter successfully. Lisa’s practical\, research-backed guidance will help you build a vivid display with staying power. \nSpeaker’s bio: After a 28-year career at Intel Corporation\, Lisa retired in 2015 to focus on her lifelong passion: horticulture\, plant propagation and garden design. She became a Master Gardener and spent years researching\, testing and growing exceptional long-blooming perennials. In 2020\, she founded her nursery\, specializing in plants chosen for their beauty\, performance and extended bloom seasons. The nursery is home to more than 8\,000 blooming plants\, winding paths\, ponds\, waterfalls\, fountains\, stone walls\, mountain views\, and has been featured in national magazines and on garden tours. It’s open to nursery customers and tour groups\, giving visitors the opportunity to see mature plants and combinations in a garden setting. Lisa also holds a landscape design certification from Emory University.
