Stephanie will share exquisite imagery\, behind-the-scenes stories about the book’s creation\, and insights from some of its most noteworthy gardens and their makers. \nSpeaker’s bio: Stephanie joined Gardens Illustrated as editor in 2021 and has since won the very prestigious British Society of Magazine Editors’ Editor of the Year award for Homes\, Gardens & Country two years in a row. She is also the creator\, producer and host of the magazine’s Talking Gardens podcast. Prior to joining GI\, Stephanie was the editor of The English Garden magazine and the Garden Design Journal\, the magazine of the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers. SUMMARY:Gravetye Manor: Gardening in William Robinson’s Historic Garden with Tom Coward
DESCRIPTION:Gravetye’s Head Gardener Tom Coward will share his experiences overseeing the restoration and development of one of England’s most renowned and influential gardens. Gravetye was originally created by William Robinson\, author of the landmark book\, The Wild Garden\, and one of the most significant gardeners of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tom will discuss Robinson’s life and profound legacy\, as well as the plants and methods involved in managing this historic garden in the modern world. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nTom Coward started his career as a teenager at a fruit tree nursery where he fell in love with growing plants. He then worked and studied at RHS Wisely\, Pershore College and Kew Gardens\, after which he worked in the nursery industry in Oregon and growing vegetables for a hotel in New Zealand. Prior to joining Gravetye in 2010\, he was assistant gardener to Fergus Garret at Great Dixter\, an experience which had a profound influence on his gardening.

SUMMARY:Right Fern\, Right Place with Richie Steffen
DESCRIPTION:NHS is very pleased to co-sponsor this event with the Hardy Fern Foundation. We thank Richie Steffen for generously sharing his fern cultivation expertise with us.\nDo you have dark\, shady places in your garden? Are you in need of a fern for dry shade or perhaps a wet\, waterlogged location? Richie Steffen\, Hardy Fern Foundation board member and executive director of the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden\, will discuss the best ferns for these and other special conditions–in other words\, how to find the right fern for the right spot. He will also present the ideal ferns for groundcovers\, species with colorful foliage and those that are especially striking in containers. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nFew people have a passion for plants or an excitement about gardening greater than Richie Steffen. He is the executive director for the Miller Garden\, overseeing the development of the garden\, its programs and rare plant collections. His expertise comes from over thirty-five years of experience in the horticultural field\, with the last 24 years spent at the Miller Garden. Ferns have become a specialty for him\, and he maintains extensive collections at the Miller Garden and his home garden. Richie has traveled to Europe\, Japan\, Chile\, New Zealand\, Costa Rica and numerous U.S. locations to study ferns and other plants. He is active in the gardening community and is a past president of the Hardy Fern Foundation and the Northwest Horticultural Society. A noted lecturer\, writer and photographer\, Richie is the co-author of the Plant Lover’s Guide to Ferns with his friend and fern mentor Sue Olsen. \n \nTo learn more about ferns and their many uses in ornamental horticulture\, please visit the Hardy Fern Foundation\, which began as a NHS study group in the 1970s.
