SUMMARY:Demystifying Botanical Latin with Daniel Sparler
DESCRIPTION:Who says botanical Latin (also known as scientific nomenclature) has to be head-scratchingly hard? We’re all Homo sapiens (“intelligent humans”)\, so it’s not too much of a leap for us to figure out that Rhododendron macrophyllum (literally “red-tree large-leaf”) is the Pacific rhododendron\, the state flower of Washington. This class will cover the basics (who\, what\, when\, where\, why and how) of Latin binomial plant names and provide tools for further study to help us make sense of what we grow in our gardens. \nInstructor’s Bio: \nA third of a century ago NHS Board Member Daniel Sparler Daniel planted himself in Seattle’s Seward Park neighborhood and proceeded to construct a now notorious garden brimming over with thousands of specimens of cosmopolitan origin. He first joined the board of NHS in 2006 and has taught botanical Latin all over the Puget Sound region. Since 2020\, Daniel’s more than 60 Horticulturally Yours columns have been archived on the Northwest Horticultural Society’s website. \nThis is a live event and will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Pastoral Gardens with Clare Foster
DESCRIPTION:  \nClare is the Garden Editor of House & Garden UK and will share fascinating details about the making of her newest book\, Pastoral Gardens (Montgomery Press\, 2024). A rhapsodic deep dive into gardens that blur the lines between intentional design and the wild landscape\, it offers intimate glimpses of twenty gardens in the UK\, the Continent\, U.S. and Africa – including projects by Dan Pearson\, Sarah Price and Tom Stuart-Smith. She will detail the history\, design and planting behind many of these gardens in this sumptuous meditation on bucolic beauty. \n The interviews I carried out for the book were fascinating\, veering off into philosophical\, environmental and sometimes spiritual territory and it made me realise how intimately people are connected to their gardens. They define who these people are. The gardens become an intrinsic part of their lives\, connecting them to the wider ecosystems we belong to.  — Clare Foster \nSpeaker’s Bio: \nClare was at Gardens Illustrated for nine years before joining House & Garden UK in 2005. She is a passionate life-long gardener – first on an allotment in London\, and now at her home in the English countryside\, where she cultivates a gravel garden\, a kitchen garden and herbaceous borders. She is also a freelance garden journalist and the author of six books.

SUMMARY:60th Anniversary Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Tradition: New Visions in Plants and Planting Design\nBastyr University Auditorium\, Kenmore\nSaturday\, March 14th\, 2026  |  8:30 AM – 4:00 PM\n\n \n\nAbout the Symposium\n\nThis year the Northwest Horticultural Society celebrates six decades of sharing horticultural knowledge and creating a vibrant community in the process. In recognition of this milestone\, the symposium will feature horticulturist luminaries who will speak about new directions in plant selection and design. \n\n\nJoin us to expand your knowledge\, network and connect\, enjoy morning pastries and a boxed lunch\, and browse plant sales from Celestial Dreams\, Grow Girl Seattle and Windcliff Plants. \nWe look forward to celebrating this milestone with you! \nLectures and Speakers’ Bios\n\n\n\nJared Barnes\, Ph.D.: Planting with Perception: Using the Preference Matrix to Design Natural Plantings\nJared will delve into the Kaplan Preference Matrix\, a powerful model for understanding how people perceive and connect with landscapes. He will outline its four key factors: coherence\, complexity\, legibility and mystery\, and how they shape how we feel in outdoor spaces. With practical strategies grounded in naturalistic planting\, you’ll discover how to design landscapes that are ecologically rich\, visually compelling and deeply intuitive to explore. \nDaniel J. Hinkley: Take Two \nWindcliff\, the Puget Sound garden of Dan Hinkley and Robert Jones\, was established upon the bones of an older garden\, beginning in 2000. The highly destructive winter of 2024 forced Dan to reimagine a space that was already primed for reimagining\, both philosophically and aesthetically. He will discuss the inspirations and rationale for the new approach\, as well as the plants and processes he is employing to create a garden that will never be finished. \nAnnie Guilfoyle: Gardening into the Future: Is the Way We Are Gardening Changing? \nAnnie will present how gardens and planting design are changing and developing in the UK\, with an emphasis on those leading the way forward in terms of how we garden and the plants we use to help mitigate the difficulties of ever-changing and erratic climates. In addition\, she will share examples of her own work that experiments with the use of aggregates and sand. \nLisa Roper: The Chanticleer Gravel Garden: Xeriscaping in the Delaware Valley \nLisa manages the Gravel Garden at Chanticleer\, the internationally esteemed public garden located in Wayne\, Pennsylvania. This gently sloping site is planted with a mix of finely textured grasses\, gray-leafed Mediterranean plants\, drought-tolerant perennials\, hardy succulents and annuals grown from seed. She will introduce some of her favorite plants\, talk about plant combinations and planting techniques\, the importance of editing and using photography to inform design decisions. Thanks to Lisa for sharing the photo above taken at the Gravel Garden in June. \nRichie Steffen: Rooted in Excellence: Celebrating 60 Years of NHS \nRichie will present a pictorial history of NHS and will moderate the panel discussion. \n  \nThis is a live event and will not be recorded. \n___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nThanks to a generous donation from the Pendleton & Elisabeth Carey Miller Charitable Foundation\, we are able to offer the same pricing as last year for members.\nWe are grateful to Bartlett Tree Experts for their sponsorship of NHS educational programming. Fees from the symposium will support our educational programs\, as well as our community outreach grants and scholarships.
