SUMMARY:Forest Bathing at Kruckeberg Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:Discover the medicine of nature through a guided forest bathing experience in the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden led by Cascadia Forest Therapy’s founder Michael Stein-Ross. Forest bathing (or shinrin-yoku) encourages participants to move in nature at a slower pace and take in the atmosphere of the environment. Multiple scientific studies have shown that the practice lowers stress and blood pressure levels\, while increasing immune system functioning. Michael will offer an evolving series of invitations crafted to help participants slow down and open their senses. This encourages mindfulness\, which readies the heart and mind to be fully present in the natural world. He will hold space for everyone to arrive at their unique relationship with the Earth while offering opportunities to witness our shared connections. The experience will close with tea brewed from native plants and light healthy snacks.  \nGuide’s Bio: \nMichael Stein-Ross founded Cascadia Forest Therapy in 2018 after earning his Nature and Forest Therapy Guide certification. Since then he has led hundreds of forest bathing sessions across the Puget Sound region. Over the last two years he facilitated Cascadia Forest Therapy’s transformation into a non-profit\, whose mission is to grow the regional culture of nature connection by ensuring accessibility to guided forest and nature therapy experiences. He also teaches in the Highline School District and lives in Des Moines with his wife and two children.

SUMMARY:Climate Connections: Exploring West Coast Native Plants and Global Counterparts in the Miller Garden (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Join Head Gardener Del Brummet for a rare opportunity to experience the esteemed Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden. The grounds are set into a sloped landscape overlooking the Puget Sound whose maritime air moderates the garden’s climate\, which features many different soil types and microclimates. He will focus on how Elisabeth Miller thoughtfully combined West Coast native plants with specimens from similar climates from across the world to create an adaptable and compelling garden. He will also illustrate how the horticultural staff continue to develop and experiment with Mrs. Miller’s botanical legacy. \nSpeaker Bio: \nNHS board member Del became interested in plants through hiking and building trails with the Washington Trails Association. At the University of Washington\, he worked in a restoration ecology lab researching propagation techniques\, with a focus on native plants of the Garry oak ecosystem. He graduated in 2014 with a bachelor of science degree in biology and joined the Miller Garden the following year. He teaches about native and exotic plants\, propagation\, and species of seasonal interest for NHS. \nA portion of the class fees will be donated to the Great Plant Picks program.

SUMMARY:Historic Gardens of Gravelly Lake with Camille Paulsen (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:The Lakewood area\, just south of Tacoma\, is a treasure trove of historically significant homes and gardens around Gravelly Lake. Join NHS Board Member Camille Paulsen for a tour of six of these jewels\, five of which are private and rarely experienced by visitors. \nThe day starts at Lakewold Gardens\, where its Executive Director and Head Gardener (and past NHS Board President) Justin Henderson and Camille will provide an overview of the area’s notable gardens. We will then carpool a short distance to the Weyerhaeuser garden\, which was developed by George and Wendy Weyerhaueser. Wendy was the daughter of the Wagners\, who owned Lakewold. It is very much a Northwest garden\, filled with old growth fir trees\, oaks\, dogwood and–of course–rhododendrons\, wisteria and roses. Clara Ladd’s nearby garden showcases glorious Garry oaks and a Chilean firetree\, one of very few in the region. We will return to Lakewold for lunch (bring your own) and an exploration of the 10-acre grounds designed by the pioneering landscape architect Thomas Church\, with its parterres\, reflecting pool\, tea house\, woodlands and magnificent champion trees. Board Member Sue Goetz will be on hand to share her experience researching and recreating the original Church-designed knot garden. Finally we will travel to Villa Madera\, which was built in 1920\, and the adjacent Madera Japanese and Rose Gardens. \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Sex Lives of Plants with Heronswood’s Dr. Ross Bayton
DESCRIPTION:Flowers are the reason many people create gardens\, but plants don’t produce blooms for our benefit. Instead\, flower production enables plants to share their genes and produce the next generation. Join Dr. Ross Bayton\, director of the celebrated Heronswood Garden in Kingston\, WA\, as he examines the varied reproductive strategies of flowers\, ferns\, and conifers. He will provide fascinating insights that are particularly valuable to gardeners seeking to better understand the life cycles of plants and how to propagate their favorites. \nSpeaker Bio: \nLondon-born botanist\, taxonomist\, plantsman and gardener Dr. Bayton received his Ph.D. in plant taxonomy from the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew. His intensive research and fieldwork in Kenya\, Madagascar and Burkina Faso led to a revision of the Borassus genus (palm). He is the author of several books\, including “New Trees: Introductions to Cultivation” (with John Grimshaw)\, “Plant Families: A Guide for Gardeners and Botanists” (with Simon Maugham)\, and most recently “The Gardener’s Botanical: An Encyclopedia of Latin Plant Names.” Ross was the gardening editor of the UK’s best-selling gardening periodical\, BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine. He joined Heronswood in 2017 as a botanist and became director in 2022. When not there\, he is cultivating his five-acre home garden in Bremerton. \nRecording will be sent within 24 hours of event and will be available for 4 weeks.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of an 18th Century Irish Garden and its Spectacular Meadows with Seamus O'Brien
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome Seamus O’Brien\, head gardener at Ireland’s National Botanic Gardens\, Kilmacurragh\, to Seattle. He will share the garden’s evolution and rich history\, which date back to monastic origins in the 17th century. Two centuries later\, it became a wild Robinsonian garden\, when exotic plants and trees from international collecting expeditions were added. Seamus will also detail the exuberant restoration of Kilmacurragh’s 300-year old hay meadows. The spectacle launches in February\, when a million crocus neopolitanus (native range: Italy\, Greece and the Balkan Peninsula) bloom\, making way for nearly 150 native wildflowers and grasses over the next six months. Among the stars are devil’s-bit scabious\, lousewort\, orchids\, pignut and yellow rattle. Learn how the process has evolved since its beginning in 2007\, including regenerative and sustainable management practices that have culminated in what Seamus calls “the little Noah’s Ark of wildflowers” and a haven for pollinators\, birds and more. A lively Q&A will follow the lecture.  \nSpeaker Bio: \nSeamus O’Brien\, one of Ireland’s premier horticulturists\, became head gardener of the National Botanic Gardens\, Kilmacurragh in 2006. He received his horticultural training at the National Botanic Gardens\, Glasnevin and holds an International Diploma in Botanic Gardens Management from the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew. He is a member of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Woody Plant Committee and is a judge of the RHS Early Spring Shows. In 2018 Seamus was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland’s Gold Medal of Honour for distinguished services to horticulture in Ireland. In pursuit of botanical and historical knowledge\, he has traveled to Bhutan\, China\, India\, Myanmar\, Nepal\, Tibet\, Oceania\, California and Chile. He is the author of two award-winning books: “In the Footsteps of Augustine Henry and his Chinese Collectors” and “In the Footsteps of Joseph Dalton Hooker: A Sikkim Adventure.” \nThank you to Bartlett Tree Experts for their generous donation to our 2025 Education Fund\, \nwhich helps make in-person events like this possible.\nAdditional Resources: \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXEz0SVhc_Q \nhttps://www.instagram.com/kilmacurraghgardensopw/ \nhttps://www.instagram.com/seamus_d_o_brien/ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/nationalbotanicgardensofirelandkilmacurragh \n  \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Inspiration from the Knepp Rewilding Project with Head Gardener Charlie Harpur
DESCRIPTION:Plantsman and landscape designer Charlie Harpur is head gardener at the Knepp Castle Estate in the UK\, the site of a pioneering 3500-acre rewilding project initiated in the early 2000s. He primarily oversees the more recent rewilding of Knepp’s Victorian Walled Garden\, a design collaboration between internationally acclaimed landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith and horticultural ecologist James Hitchmough\, and the development of its regenerative Market Garden. Charlie and his team are guided by the principle that “Rewilding a garden does not just simply mean ‘letting go’. Instead\, it requires thinking creatively\, identifying ways in which disturbance can mimic and encourage natural processes.” Through images and video he will detail the bold  transformation of a croquet lawn into a dynamic\, productive landscape that welcomes wildlife and nearly 1000 different plant species. \nSpeaker Bio: \nPrior to joining Knepp in 2022\, Charlie trained as an architect and worked for landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith for several years. He also gained practical experience in horticulture and ecology at the Chelsea Physic Garden\, Great Dixter and Kew Gardens\, graduating with a Kew Diploma in Horticulture in 2020. \nAdditional Resources: \nhttps://www.instagram.com/kneppwilding/\nhttps://www.nyrb.com/products/wilding\nhttps://www.bloomsbury.com/us/book-of-wilding-9781526659309/-9781526659309/\n \n \n \nAll images courtesy of Knepp Castle Estate.

It profiles dozens of shrublands\, shrub forms\, and shrub community types\, showcasing their presence across diverse habitats and growing conditions. The book also explores the philosophies\, aesthetics\, and design strategies that emerge when gardening with these remarkable plants. Shrouded In Light prioritizes inspiration over instruction\, featuring more than 250 captivating photographs and illustrations to create an immersive experience of shrublands. The book is the result of collaboration with numerous photographers\, land managers\, biologists\, horticulture professionals\, and artists from around the world—including many colleagues from the Gardens—to bring this vision to life. \nSpeaker Bios:\nJessi Bloom was born and raised in the PNW and has a strong background in horticulture and environmental sciences. Her early experience ranged in project management\, from organizing restoration projects with community volunteers\, to high-end residential and commercial landscape design/build. In early 2000\, she decided to start an ethical business in the green industry to fill a niche for organic and ecological landscaping.  Seattle Times named her a “rockstar in the ecological gardening movement\,” as she led N.W. Bloom to numerous environmental awards. She is the best-selling author of multiple books\, including “Practical Permaculture Design”\, now available in six languages\, and “Creating Sanctuary: Sacred Garden Spaces”. Her work has been featured in The New York Times\, Better Homes & Gardens\, Sunset Magazine\, Martha Stewart Living\, Mother Earth News\, UTNE Reader\, Fine Gardening Magazine\, and PBS’s Growing a Greener World. \nSean Hogan is founder\, owner and principal designer at Cistus Design Nursery. Specializing in both public and private garden design\, he is an author\, plant hunter and collector who is passionate about introducing new and climate-appropriate plants to western North America. Sean has played a key role in popularizing underused and lesser-known plants suited for summer-dry climates. Located on scenic Sauvie Island\, 15 miles northwest of Portland\, Cistus offers a diverse and ever-evolving selection of climate-adapted plants\, unique garden textures\, and horticultural treasures from around the world. \nKevin Philip Williams is a naturalistic gardener who collaborates with plants to create dynamic\, thought-provoking landscapes. His distinctive approach blends bioregional plant palettes\, a hardcore punk ethos\, and post-human aesthetics to craft wild\, immersive spaces. His work with Denver Botanic Gardens has contributed to the development of renowned public gardens throughout the city. Previously\, Kevin was a gardener on The High Line in Manhattan and a horticulture intern at Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. He holds an master’s degree in public horticulture from the Longwood Graduate Program at the University of Delaware and a bachelor’s degree in the history and philosophy of science from Bard College. \nMichael Guidi is an ecologist and horticulture researcher dedicated to naturalistic plantings that reflect the adaptability and resilience of wild ecosystems. Drawing inspiration from both urban liminal spaces and untamed landscapes\, he favors common and weedy plants over rare specimens\, advocating for dynamic\, self-sustaining gardens and green infrastructure as alternatives to static\, high-maintenance landscapes. His research bridges ecological theory with horticultural practice to expand the definition of gardens and gardening. Before joining the horticulture team at Denver Botanic Gardens\, Michael worked as a field biologist. He holds an master’s degree in ecology from Colorado State University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Ithaca College. \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFees will support our educational programs\, as well as our community outreach grants and scholarships.

SUMMARY:Demystifying Botanical Latin with Daniel Sparler
DESCRIPTION:Who says botanical Latin (also known as scientific nomenclature) has to be head-scratchingly hard? We’re all Homo sapiens (“intelligent humans”)\, so it’s not too much of a leap for us to figure out that Rhododendron macrophyllum (literally “red-tree large-leaf”) is the Pacific rhododendron\, the state flower of Washington. This class will cover the basics (who\, what\, when\, where\, why and how) of Latin binomial plant names and provide tools for further study to help us make sense of what we grow in our gardens. \nInstructor Bio\nA third of a century ago Daniel planted himself in Seattle’s Seward Park neighborhood and proceeded to construct a now notorious garden brimming over with thousands of specimens of cosmopolitan origin. He first joined the board of NHS in 2006 and has taught botanical Latin all over the Puget Sound region. Since 2020\, Daniel’s more than 60 Horticulturally Yours columns have been archived on the Northwest Horticultural Society’s website. \nLIMIT:  15 (MAXIMUM 2 PER REGISTRATION) – FEE IS PER PERSON \n \nRhododendron macrophyllum \nImage(s) courtesy of Wikipedia.
