Esteemed botanical illustrator Crystal Shin will guide you through simple techniques for observing and sketching plants. Learn what botanical features to look for\, how to begin a sketch journal and how quick sketches can help you better understand plant forms and structures. You will receive a sketchbook and pencil for in-class use that you can take home. Feel free to bring your own drawing supplies. \nInstructor’s Bio: \nCrystal is a botanical artist and natural science illustrator known for her detailed\, scientifically accurate plant drawings. She completed the Natural Science Illustration Certificate program at the University of Washington and served as the primary botanical illustrator for the second edition of Flora of the Pacific Northwest for the UW Herbarium at the Burke Museum\, creating 882 illustrations. She continues to work with the Herbarium as a botanical illustrator\, and her artwork has been featured in various scientific journals and publications. Crystal is a sought-after instructor\, teaching nationally and internationally for various organizations including the Burke Museum\, the Washington Native Plant Society\, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators Northwest\, Pacific Northwest Botanical Artists\, the American Society of Botanical Artists\, the New York Botanical Gardens\, and the Vienna School of Botanical Illustration.     \n \n

SUMMARY:Fox Island and Gig Harbor Tour -- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:NHS board members Camille Paulsen and Sue Goetz will lead an art-inspired tour of four exceptional gardens in the South Sound.\nOur day begins on Fox Island at a breathtaking three-acre waterfront retreat\, where a peaceful woodland path leads to a towering tree house\, vibrant cottage gardens and an array of tranquil water features. \nNext\, we’ll visit an artist’s garden featuring sweeping drifts of drought-tolerant plants\, productive raised vegetable beds and a serene pond. \nWe then continue to Gig Harbor to explore the garden of a painter who extends her artistic vision beyond the canvas\, creating dazzling displays of color with flowering perennials and a spectacular koi pond. We’ll pause for a lunch (please bring your own; we’ll supply drinks and cookies) in this blufftop garden while enjoying sweeping views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier. \nOur final destination is a sculptor’s Asian-inspired garden\, where a carefully curated bonsai collection and inspiring sculpture walk provide a fitting finale to this day of horticultural artistry. \nGarden addresses will be sent to registrants a few days beforehand.

SUMMARY:Eco-Aesthetic Gardening: Creating Beauty and Habitat at Ardán Garden with Conall O'Caoimh
DESCRIPTION:In 2002 home gardeners Nuala Doherty and Conall O’Caoimh bought a house on a windy\, hilly peninsula just northeast of Dublin. They were surprised when a newt\, thought to be extinct in the region\, arrived in the garden. This discovery launched the couple on a path of learning about how their landscape interacts with nature and provides habitats for wildlife. They learned to garden organically\, to cultivate with no-dig methods and to return everything to the soil. Today\, Ardán Garden is a much-visited attraction that features densely planted herbaceous beds\, an exotic garden with a pond and bog garden\, a vegetable garden\, a small woodland and a natural rocky outcrop\, all interspersed with Conall’s sculpture. Ardán is recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland and is an official partner of the UNESCO Dublin Bay Biosphere. Conall will detail Ardán’s evolution and the practices that ensure their land actively creates habitat for wildlife. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nPrior to establishing Ardán Garden\, Conall and Nuala had busy careers outside of horticulture–gardening was a shared weekend pastime. Conall is a sculptor\, gardener and garden writer. His background in human rights and international development have influenced his care for the earth and the way he creates sculptures in bronze\, glass and ceramics that reflect the beauty of nature and our relationship with the world.

The designer/owner transformed a long-neglected\, overgrown yard into a series of garden rooms\, including a drought-tolerant\, sunny front garden\, a cutting garden and a meditation garden. \nCarkeek Park\n4. A mesmerizing and expansive woodland garden overlooking Carkeek Park and the Puget Sound\, with works by local artists\, a vegetable garden to die for and its latest addition: a crevice garden. \nNorth Beach\n5. Set above Golden Gardens Park\, this mature woodland garden celebrates over 45 years of layered design and horticultural artistry. Distinctive plants\, canopy trees and curated containers bring together texture\, structure and seasonal nuance in a serene mixed-shade setting. \n6. A contemporary garden whose owners operate a full-service garden design and installation firm. Together\, they have been evolving their own home garden over the last nine years. \nNorth Green Lake\n7. The garden of a practicing visual artist and former perennial plant buyer at a local garden center. He brings a painterly eye to plant combinations and spatial design\, along with plant selection expertise. \nNorth Seattle/Maple Leaf\n8. A “collector’s cramscaped garden” is how the owner\, a retired Kubota Garden Senior Gardener\, describes the current iteration of his 48-year-old garden filled with hundreds of conifers\, more than 75 deciduous trees and over 50 tons of stone walls and walkways. \n \n
