SUMMARY:Cascadia Iris Gardens Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided visit to Cascadia Iris Gardens\, a unique and ever-evolving specialty collection developed by Patrick and Margaret Spence since 2004. What began as a small personal collection of irises has grown into an expansive five-acre property dedicated to the cultivation\, hybridization and display of an outstanding collection of Japanese irises—considered among the finest in both quality and diversity—as well as its rare and nationally unparalleled collection of 40-chromosome Sino-Siberian irises. \nWe’ll explore active growing fields alongside thoughtfully designed display gardens that include a collection of over 50 peony varieties and lilacs. The rich diversity of plant life is designed to support pollinators and local and migratory birds. Additionally\, Patrick will share the challenges and rewards of establishing plants in new environments\, as the garden’s development included relocating and reestablishing a large collection across properties. \nSpeakers’ bios: \nPatrick and Margaret Spence are the owners of Cascadia Iris Gardens\, where they cultivate an ever-expanding series of display beds to demonstrate how irises can be a focal point in any perennial border. Their goal is to showcase how iris can be used to achieve year-round bloom in your garden. \nPatrick is a past president of Siberian Iris Society and the Society for Japanese Iris\, and current immediate past president of the King County Iris Society. Margaret is a director for the King County Iris Society and the secretary for the Society for Siberian Iris. Both are accredited iris judges through the American Iris Society. They have spoken about irises across the U.S.\, Canada and New Zealand.

SUMMARY:Tour Three Urban Gardens with Lorene Edwards Forkner -- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Lake Washington Garden: Vangie and Daniel Pepper’s landscape on the shore of Lake Washington is filled with their favorite plants and delicious flavors. Indoor-outdoor living spaces\, cobbled surfaces and a secluded fountain courtyard echo aspects of the couple’s favorite European destinations. Formal plantings of English roses and buxom hydrangeas are punctuated by columnar Italian cypress and a row of statuesque crape myrtle offer blooms to the second story interior while framing views to the lake. Generous dining and cooking spaces are dedicated to Daniel’s passion for cooking with fire. Moving towards the lake\, the landscape relaxes with mixed perennial and herb plantings\, culminating in a pollinator meadow along the beach. \n\nBryant Neighborhood Garden: NHS board member Gillian Mathews is a passionate gardener with an eye for creating a vibrant landscape that celebrates a life well lived in her nine-year-old garden. The hardscaping was designed by Richard Hartlage of Land Morphology. Textural plantings accented with bold color embrace hospitable spaces where Gillian indulges her love of plants and entertaining. Features include a dining table set in the heart of the garden beneath a linear metal structure lending height to the landscape and an outdoor lounge area in the shelter of a chunky pergola\, while discrete plots provide a cutting garden\, fresh fruit and seasonal produce. Gillian is the founder (now retired) of Ravenna Gardens\, a shop filled with garden goods and home accessories inspired by her day-to-day passion for a life grounded in the garden. \nMontlake Neighborhood Garden: Richard Hartlage’s striking urban garden is filled with choice plants curated with an expert plantsman’s keen eye. Color\, form and hardscape materials express a one-of a kind vision and the garden serves as a living laboratory where Richard explores his lifelong fascination with plants. The front garden\, a mix of clipped boxwood and seasonal color\, is a gift to passersby. In the back\, informal conversational seating beneath a hanging garden feature\, container plantings\, and a novel take on crevice gardening reveal the talented designer’s spirit of invention. Richard is the CEO and founding partner of Land Morphology\, a Seattle-based landscape architecture firm known for designing award-winning public and private landscapes\, including Seattle’s Waterfront Park and Chihuly Garden and Glass. \nTour leader’s bio: Lorene Edwards Forkner is an author and speaker whose work centers on exploring the wonders of the natural world and garden-making. She writes a weekly gardening column for Pacific NW Magazine in The Seattle Times and posts monthly on Garden Rant. In 2024 Lorene worked with photographer Doreen Wynja on the book\, The Spirited Garden: Creative Private Retreats\, profiling personal gardens and the creative plantspeople tending their spaces with heart and soul. Both the Pepper and Mathews gardens were featured in the book and each attendee will receive a copy.

SUMMARY:Eco-Aesthetic Gardening: Creating Beauty and Habitat at Ardán Garden with Conall O'Caoimh
DESCRIPTION:In 2002 home gardeners Nuala Doherty and Conall O’Caoimh bought a house on a windy\, hilly peninsula just northeast of Dublin. They were surprised when a newt\, thought to be extinct in the region\, arrived in the garden. This discovery launched the couple on a path of learning about how their landscape interacts with nature and provides habitats for wildlife. They learned to garden organically\, to cultivate with no-dig methods and to return everything to the soil. Today\, Ardán Garden is a much-visited attraction that features densely planted herbaceous beds\, an exotic garden with a pond and bog garden\, a vegetable garden\, a small woodland and a natural rocky outcrop\, all interspersed with Conall’s sculpture. Ardán is recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland and is an official partner of the UNESCO Dublin Bay Biosphere. Conall will detail Ardán’s evolution and the practices that ensure their land actively creates habitat for wildlife. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nPrior to establishing Ardán Garden\, Conall and Nuala had busy careers outside of horticulture–gardening was a shared weekend pastime. Conall is a sculptor\, gardener and garden writer. His background in human rights and international development have influenced his care for the earth and the way he creates sculptures in bronze\, glass and ceramics that reflect the beauty of nature and our relationship with the world.

SUMMARY:Burn to Bloom: Reimagining Resilient Landscapes with Studio Petrichor -- FREE TO MEMBERS!
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in the lived experience of preparing for and moving through a firestorm\, this presentation by Leigh Adams and Shawn Maestretti\, co-founders of Studio Petrichor of Altadena\, CA\, is about our relationship with land\, fire\, community and the futures we are actively shaping. Through vivid storytelling\, ecological insight and practical design strategies\, they will challenge conventional\, fear-based approaches to fire and resilience and will invite us to reimagine landscapes not as liabilities to manage\, but as living systems that can support safety\, regeneration and long-term stewardship. True resilience begins not just in the land\, but in how we choose to live with it. \nSpeakers’ bios: \nLeigh and Shawn are regenerative designers\, teachers and co-founders of Studio Petrichor and Poly/Ana\, two intertwined platforms that invite communities into relationship with land through ecological literacy\, fire resilience and poetic restoration. They offer talks and workshops that are equally soulful and practical—braiding systems thinking\, ancestral memory and design justice into every conversation. Both have lived through wildfire loss and chose to stay\, listen and begin again—through soil. Their partnership blends feminine and masculine approaches\, professional design and community healing\, technical fluency and story-driven insight. Leigh and Shawn offer more than knowledge—they guide people into deeper connection with land\, memory\, and belonging.
