SUMMARY:Bonsai Appreciation and Basics with Anthony Fajarillo
DESCRIPTION:Anthony is a bonsai artist and educator who will introduce the ancient art of bonsai in a practical\, approachable way. This engaging demonstration-based class at Anthony’s private residence will teach you basic care techniques\, how to select suitable plant material and start your own bonsai. You will gain a clear understanding of the fundamentals and learn what to look for when appreciating bonsai. Anthony will treat us to a tour of his private bonsai collection\, offering a rare opportunity to see mature trees up close and to learn directly from them in a garden setting. Note: this presentation-based class will not include any hands-on activity for participants. \nInstructor’s Bio: \nAnthony shares bonsai as a living practice of mindfulness\, creativity and connection\, and brings decades of hands-on experience to his teaching and public presentations. He is a past president of the Puget Sound Bonsai Association and a board director at the Pacific Bonsai Museum. He has participated in national bonsai exhibitions and is an award-winning garden designer. Anthony owns a construction and landscaping company\, Redwood Builders Landscaping.

Bess was an instructor at the Edmonds College horticulture program for 28 years\, with a focus on courses in pruning and tree care\, plant identification\, plant pests and diagnosis\, and soils. \nRichie Steffen\, former president and board member of NHS\, is enthusiastic about (or more accurately\, obsessed with) plants. He is the executive director for the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden where he oversees the Garden\, its rare plant collections and its primary educational program\, Great Plant Picks.

DESCRIPTION:“I practice the fine art of garden cramscaping and I’m a firm believer there is always room for one more plant.”\nSo says Loree Bohl\, founder of the highly popular blog danger garden. In this presentation\, her plant obsession will be on full display as she gives us a tour of her inimitable Portland garden\, with a focus on its myriad containers–many of which she’s assembled from found objects and most of which require seasonal movement. Loree calls that process\, which happens in the spring and the autumn\, The Great Migration. She will share photos illustrating how she uses containers to: \n\n\n\ngrow plants that are not happy year-round in our climate\ngrow plants in places you otherwise could not (hard surfaces\, areas with root competition)\ntailor soil and water to the individual plant’s needs\nsqueeze in more plants/take things vertical\nprovide a temporary home for new plants\nput a particular plant in the spotlight\nscreen an unwanted view\nflex her creative muscles by “fabricating” a new container\n\n\n\nSpeaker’s bio: \nLoree grew up in Spokane and now lives in Portland. Her blog explores her love for gardens\, agaves and all things spiky—as well as a fondness for ferns and a good patch of PNW moss. Her garden has appeared in several publications\, including Sunset Magazine\, Fine Gardening\, and the book Private Gardens of the Pacific Northwest (Gibbs Smith\, 2021). She is the author of Fearless Gardening: Be Bold\, Break the Rules\, Grow What You Love (Timber Press\, 2021) and has written for numerous magazines. She has served on the board of directors for the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon and Pacific Horticulture.

SUMMARY:Maximize Plant Pollination with Bee Expert Thyra McKelvie
DESCRIPTION:Thyra is managing director and global solitary bee educator at Rent Mason Bees and will present the many ways that mason and leafcutter bees boost a garden’s productivity. These powerful pollinators visit up to 2\,000 flowers a day and are capable of pollinating up to 95% of the blooms they land upon. They are gentle\, non-aggressive and non-stinging\, making them safe and easy to host in home gardens. Thyra will detail how to provide the proper nesting habitat for these prodigious pollinators and share how they help create healthier\, more productive gardens.  \n Speaker’s bio:  \nThyra has been with Rent Mason Bees\, the largest solitary bee provider in the U.S.\, for nine years. As a nationally recognized voice in solitary bee education\, she teaches at garden clubs\, trains master gardeners\, works with schools and environmental organizations\, and contributes to national gardening publications. She is also the creator of Rent Mason Bees’ educational YouTube channel and recently appeared on the Cultivating Place podcast.  \n \n

SUMMARY:Gardening for Wildlife with Matt Jevnikar at Heronswood
DESCRIPTION:Gardeners are custodians of the land\, and it falls upon us to protect the native animals that live in our gardens\, from bats to bugs. A diverse population of wildlife has many benefits in the landscape\, including pest control and pollination services. Head Gardener Matt will share ways to encourage native creatures and how to select the best plants for them. The event includes a lecture\, garden tour and a bug safari\, during which he’ll highlight the many native insects living at Heronswood. Plant and gift shop purchases can be made before and after class. Attendees are encouraged to bring lunch and wander the garden afterwards. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nMatt Jevnikar joined Heronswood in 2019. He received a B.S. in agriculture from The Ohio State University\, with a focus on landscape horticulture and a minor in entomology. After many years in northeast Ohio\, he set out to explore flora in other parts of the country\, from working with regional New England native plants in Massachusetts to maintaining pollinator gardens in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. At home he enjoys spending time with family and distracting them with the smaller creatures and plants that might be overlooked while exploring nature trails.

DESCRIPTION:Gravetye’s Head Gardener Tom Coward will share his experiences overseeing the restoration and development of one of England’s most renowned and influential gardens. Gravetye was originally created by William Robinson\, author of the landmark book\, The Wild Garden\, and one of the most significant gardeners of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tom will discuss Robinson’s life and profound legacy\, as well as the plants and methods involved in managing this historic garden in the modern world. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nTom Coward started his career as a teenager at a fruit tree nursery where he fell in love with growing plants. He then worked and studied at RHS Wisely\, Pershore College and Kew Gardens\, after which he worked in the nursery industry in Oregon and growing vegetables for a hotel in New Zealand. Prior to joining Gravetye in 2010\, he was assistant gardener to Fergus Garret at Great Dixter\, an experience which had a profound influence on his gardening.

Are you in need of a fern for dry shade or perhaps a wet\, waterlogged location? Richie Steffen\, Hardy Fern Foundation board member and executive director of the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden\, will discuss the best ferns for these and other special conditions–in other words\, how to find the right fern for the right spot. He will also present the ideal ferns for groundcovers\, species with colorful foliage and those that are especially striking in containers. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nFew people have a passion for plants or an excitement about gardening greater than Richie Steffen. He is the executive director for the Miller Garden\, overseeing the development of the garden\, its programs and rare plant collections. His expertise comes from over thirty-five years of experience in the horticultural field\, with the last 24 years spent at the Miller Garden. Ferns have become a specialty for him\, and he maintains extensive collections at the Miller Garden and his home garden. Richie has traveled to Europe\, Japan\, Chile\, New Zealand\, Costa Rica and numerous U.S. locations to study ferns and other plants. He is active in the gardening community and is a past president of the Hardy Fern Foundation and the Northwest Horticultural Society. A noted lecturer\, writer and photographer\, Richie is the co-author of the Plant Lover’s Guide to Ferns with his friend and fern mentor Sue Olsen. \n \nTo learn more about ferns and their many uses in ornamental horticulture\, please visit the Hardy Fern Foundation\, which began as a NHS study group in the 1970s.
