SUMMARY:Falling for a Hillside Garden: Streissguth Garden Tour -- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Streissguth Gardens is a 1.25-acre mixed public/private garden in Seattle’s North Capitol Hill neighborhood\, with stellar views of Lake Union\, Queen Anne\, downtown Seattle and the Olympic mountains. Join Garden Directors Ben Streissguth and Jade Takashima for an intimate tour of their public garden\, private gardens and architectural marvel of a home on a Capitol Hill hillside. They will share the history of the Streissguth family’s role in developing the garden\, as well as ongoing conservation efforts to keep this public garden endowed and running smoothly. \nTwo generations of love stories have transpired on this quiet street over 65 years. Dan Streissguth and Ann fell in love gardening their steep hillside gardens after she moved next door. In 1972 the couple purchased two vacant lots to the south (across the Blaine St. stairs) and developed a garden there. In 1996 they donated the gardens to Seattle Parks in conjunction with the Parks department purchasing the three adjoining lots south of the garden\, saving them from development. \nIn early 2018\, during a chance visit to the garden Jade met Ben. During a tour\, they bonded over a mutual love of gardening\, plants and technology. In 2021 they were married in the garden and are now its caretakers. That year they opened the Streissguth Gardens Conservancy\, a 501 (c)(3)\, to help the garden grow into the future. \nSpeakers’ bios: \nFor over two decades\, Jade has been a professional gardener and small business owner. Additionally\, she has taught ELS for years. She holds an MLA and a Certificate of Preservation Planning from the UW. Since meeting Ben\, she shares her time between the preservation and care of Streissguth Gardens and ELS. \nBen’s first memories are in the garden. He has been a small business owner for over three decades\, holds three horticulture degrees from Edmonds College and a BLA from the UW. Since 2014 he has focused his energies on Streissguth Gardens and management of his family’s rental properties.

SUMMARY:Foraging for Basketry and Wild Crafts with Erin Cox
DESCRIPTION:Local forager and wild craft artist Erin will provide an overview of the incredible plants that grow here in the Pacific Northwest and she will demonstrate how to identify\, gather\, store and use them to create baskets and crafts that bring nature inside. Whether you live in an urban\, suburban or rural setting\, there are forageable crafting and weaving materials to be found year-round: day lily\, daffodil\, dandelion\, crocosmia\, iris\, cattails\, rushes\, bulrush\, ivy\, honeysuckle\, wisteria\, dogwood\, willow and more. Erin will share her approach to sustainable and responsible foraging. This class is designed for beginners — come discover some fun\, easy ways to get started on your wild crafts journey. \n\nInstructor’s bio: Although Erin has lived in the Pacific Northwest for over 20 years\, it wasn’t until she discovered the joy of farming and foraging basketry materials that she truly formed deep ties to this place and a meaningful connection to the land. Through weaving\, she found a new way to explore and appreciate the biodiversity of our region. In 2024\, she began casually teaching basketry and wild crafting and established a small basketry willow farm in Carnation\, Washington\, where she invites students to learn\, harvest and engage directly with the materials they weave. In 2025\, she opened Field and Forest Crafts and her own private teaching studio in Shoreline.

SUMMARY:Field Class: Gardening Under Mature Trees with Christina Pfeiffer -- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Christina Pfeiffer\, a highly regarded Seattle-based horticulture educator and ISA Certified Arborist\, will cover how to assess where\, how and what type of new plants to add under mature trees. Installing new plantings and maintaining old gardens within the shade and root zone of large trees can present challenges for the trees and companion plantings alike. Misunderstandings about mature trees and their roots often lead to their eventual decline\, while grass and other plantings can suffer under increasing competition for light and soil space. We will look at tools and methods for determining tree root locations\, different examples of tree and understory plantings\, and best practices for adapting and maintaining plantings within the microclimate influences of mature trees. This field class will be held in cooperation with Dunn Gardens staff. \nSpeaker’s Bio:  \nChristina has enjoyed a long career in landscape horticulture and brings a wealth of practical experience and attention to current research to her classes. She holds degrees in horticulture from Michigan State University and the University of Washington. She has met the challenges\, successes and failures of gardening under mature trees through her past role as a horticulturist at the Washington Park Arboretum\, as a consulting arborist\, and in her own garden. She is co-author with Mary Robson of Pacific Northwest Month-by-Month Gardening (Cool Springs Press\, 2017).

SUMMARY:Meet the Designers Tour with Courtney Olander and Susie Thompson\, APLD -- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of three gardens in the Laurelhurst and Windermere neighborhoods designed by local landscape designers Courtney Olander and Susie Thompson\, APLD.\nThese in-demand Seattle-based designers will share each site’s project goals\, inspirations and challenges so that you can learn what makes these gardens work and how you can apply the same wisdom to your own landscape. All three were constructed by Kevin Monohan and his team at Avalon NW Outdoor Builders. Kevin will join us to discuss the construction process. \nCourtney’s “Laurelhurst Living” garden began with the owner’s directive (given with a smile) “I don’t like things too perfect.” Courtney’s challenge was to tie it all together without making it look overly designed\, which she accomplished by injecting lots of texture\, thoughtful color\, seasonal interest and fun plant combinations. New hardscaping included stone planters\, two custom metal gates\, a trellis\, cobble-lined stone paths and new stone steps leading up from the street. \nCourtney’s “Laurelhurst Classic” garden began as a classic tale – a beautiful home with a mature landscape that dulled its charm. To improve on an awkward transition to the overgrown back garden she removed the old deck\, replacing it with a narrow stone landing and wide wedding cake steps that lead to a new gravel gathering area with space for both dining and a fire pit. She kept the mature trees that frame the space and added a surround of fresh plantings. \n\nSusie’s Windermere project is a 13\,000-square-foot property boasting iconic mid-century modern architecture. The homeowners desired updated outdoor living\, entertaining and play areas that would establish a cohesive connection with the interior. The site’s unique layout allowed for the addition of a sport court surrounded by gardens\, a patio featuring a fire pit\, seating\, a covered cooking and dining space. The backyard is now a spa retreat with a hot tub\, sauna and cold plunge in a garden setting. \n \nCourtney Olander has a background in both science and art and has combined these talents and skills in her successful landscape design career. She has also written for Fine Gardening and her gardens have been published in a variety of magazines. She is president-elect of of the Washington chapter of APLDA. \nSusie Thompson\, APLD is a nationally Certified Landscape Designer and has been designing gardens for over 20 years. She has created multiple award-winning gardens at the Northwest Flower & Garden Festival and is a past president of of the Washington chapter of APLDA. \nKevin Monohan trained as a landscape architect\, but found his true calling in building gardens designed by others\, as well as his own designs. A designer at heart\, he always brings a sense of creativity and collaboration to his work\, along with expert craftsmanship. He is the owner of Avalon NW Outdoor Builders and is a past president of of the Washington chapter of APLDA. \nGarden addresses will be sent to registrants a few days beforehand.

SUMMARY:South of Seattle Tour: Burien\, Three Tree Point and Normandy Park --SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Join NHS Board Members Pam Sturgeon and Gillian Mathews for a day exploring five gardens South of Seattle\, from Burien to Three Tree Point to Normandy Park. Bring your lunch to enjoy at Seahurst Park — we’ll bring the drinks and cookies.\nWe’ll meet at a Burien garden\, where the owners have created four distinct spaces connected by meandering pathways. The garden is designed to welcome wildlife — the lawn has been eliminated and replaced with pollinator plants and PNW natives benefiting birds\, butterflies and other invertebrates. Access: There is a steep driveway\, a slightly uneven stone and gravel pathway and nine steps. \nNext we visit an eclectic sanctuary filled with 50 Japanese maples\, 89 conifers and numerous shade plants that flourish in the Seahurst microclimate. We’ll also experience many distinct garden rooms (the Woodland\, Meditation\, Tropical and the Alpine.) \nWe head south to Three Tree Point\, where Jardin Sauvage (Wild Garden) evokes the French countryside with intimate garden spaces filled with a bounty of fragrant roses and honeysuckles. The lower garden features a small orchard of apples\, plums\, cherries and raspberries. \nAfter lunch in Seahurst Park\, we’ll explore a garden that the owners created from a sloping\, dead lawn on a corner lot purchased 42 years ago. Today it is utterly transformed\, thriving with fruits\, vegetables and perennial beds – interspersed with garden art\, happy chickens and buzzing bee hives. \nOur final stop is a Normandy Park garden created by a former NHS board member and his mother. A Japanese maple grove gives way to a lush tropical jungle with a koi pond and cascading waterfalls. From there\, the garden opens into a sun-drenched Mediterranean border\, followed by a woodland shaded by a towering coast redwood\, a cutting garden\, and a vegetable garden where every plant has an edible or medicinal purpose. \nIf you’re brimming with horticultural inspiration after the tour\, we encourage you to visit Burien’s new nursery\, Huckleberry Gardens\, a source for outdoor and indoor plants\, containers\, gifts and garden art. Tour members will receive 10% off purchases on the day of the tour. \n\nThe address for the first garden will be sent to registrants a few days beforehand.

SUMMARY:The Gardener’s Mindset: Connecting with Nature through Plants with Stephen Orr
DESCRIPTION:When we invited Stephen Orr to speak at this spring’s Northwest Flower & Garden Festival\, we were mesmerized and amused by his tales of a life spent in gardens — both his own and some of the world’s most noteworthy. We immediately asked him to give a webinar later in the year so that an expanded audience could enjoy his perspective on home gardening and his career in publishing during the heyday of home and garden print magazines (Better Homes & Gardens and Martha Stewart Living\, to name a few). Stephen’s most recent book\, The Gardener’s Mindset: Connecting with Nature through Plants (Clarkson Potter)\, was published in May. This collection of essays and photos is both contemplative and practical\, exploring how gardening influences the way we think\, feel and engage with the natural world. In this highly visual presentation\, he will motivate us to go beyond how-to projects and think more holistically about how gardeners fit into the world around us. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nStephen served as an editor at Better Homes & Gardens\, Condé Nast Traveler\, Martha Stewart Living\, House & Garden\, and Domino. He is the author of The New American Herbal (Clarkson Potter/Random House\, 2014) and Tomorrow’s Garden: Design and Inspiration for a New Age of Sustainable Gardening (Rodale\, 2011)\, and lectures widely on horticultural topics across the country. After over three decades of living in New York City\, he now lives and gardens in Cape Cod with his husband.

NHS board members Camille Paulsen and Sue Goetz\, both South Sound residents\, will be our guides. \nOur day begins in a vibrant garden filled with colorful perennials\, where a gentle stream meanders through the landscape and leads to a charming children’s playhouse. \nAfter enjoying sweeping views of Commencement Bay\, we’ll visit a productive urban garden where the entire backyard has been transformed into raised beds brimming with fruits and vegetables—a true garden-to-table experience. \nNext\, we’ll explore a garden surrounding a stately Victorian home\, one of Tacoma’s beloved “Painted Ladies.” The plantings reflect the home’s vibrant colors\, while creative design elements and repurposed treasures—including a fountain framed by a checkerboard pattern of grass and pavers—sprinkle whimsy throughout the landscape. \nWe’ll conclude at a magnificent hillside garden draped with cascading shade plants\, a tranquil water feature and an impressive collection of sculptures thoughtfully placed throughout. Our day ends with refreshing drinks and light bites on the expansive terrace\, where stunning views of Puget Sound provide the perfect finale. \nGarden addresses will be sent to registrants a few days beforehand.

SUMMARY:Burn to Bloom: Reimagining Resilient Landscapes with Studio Petrichor -- FREE TO MEMBERS!
DESCRIPTION:Regenerative designers Shawn Maestretti and Leigh Adams of Poly/Ana and Studio Petrichor will give a powerful\, deeply personal presentation about their experience of preparing for\, living through and reflecting upon the 2025 Altadena fire. Blending lived experience with emerging research and decades of ecological practice\, they will explore what actually contributes to resilience in fire-prone communities. Through storytelling\, critical inquiry\, and practical examples\, they  look beyond one-size-fits-all solutions and consider a more complete picture\, one that includes homes\, landscapes\, water\, soil\, vegetation and human connection. The future of fire resilience will not be found in vegetation removal or home-hardening alone; it will emerge from understanding the relationships between structures\, landscapes\, water\, soil\, community and fire itself. True resilience begins not just in the land\, but in how we choose to live with it. \nSpeakers’ bios: \nLeigh and Shawn are teachers and co-founders of Studio Petrichor and Poly/Ana\, two intertwined platforms that invite communities into relationship with land through ecological literacy\, fire resilience and poetic restoration. They offer talks and workshops that are equally soulful and practical—braiding systems thinking\, ancestral memory and design justice into every conversation. Both have lived through wildfire loss and chose to stay\, listen and begin again—through soil. Their partnership blends feminine and masculine approaches\, professional design and community healing\, technical fluency and story-driven insight. Leigh and Shawn offer more than knowledge—they guide people into deeper connection with land\, memory\, and belonging.

SUMMARY:Eco-Aesthetic Gardening: Creating Beauty and Habitat at Ardán Garden with Conall O'Caoimh
DESCRIPTION:In 2002 home gardeners Nuala Doherty and Conall O’Caoimh bought a house on a windy\, hilly peninsula just northeast of Dublin. They were surprised when a newt\, thought to be extinct in the region\, arrived in the garden. This discovery launched the couple on a path of learning about how their landscape interacts with nature and provides habitats for wildlife. They learned to garden organically\, to cultivate with no-dig methods and to return everything to the soil. Today\, Ardán Garden is a much-visited attraction that features densely planted herbaceous beds\, an exotic garden with a pond and bog garden\, a vegetable garden\, a small woodland and a natural rocky outcrop\, all interspersed with Conall’s sculpture. Ardán is recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland and is an official partner of the UNESCO Dublin Bay Biosphere. Conall will detail Ardán’s evolution and the practices that ensure their land actively creates habitat for wildlife. \nSpeaker’s bio: \nPrior to establishing Ardán Garden\, Conall and Nuala had busy careers outside of horticulture–gardening was a shared weekend pastime. Conall is a sculptor\, gardener and garden writer. His background in human rights and international development have influenced his care for the earth and the way he creates sculptures in bronze\, glass and ceramics that reflect the beauty of nature and our relationship with the world.
